La ceremonia de los 26° WhatsOnStage Awards se celebró este fin de semana en el histórico London Palladium, con conducción de Gina Murray y Mazz Murray, y volvió a destacar por su característica principal: se trata de los únicos grandes premios teatrales del Reino Unido decididos exclusivamente por el público.

La edición de este año estuvo claramente dominada por los grandes musicales del West End, con Paddington The Musical como el gran protagonista de la noche y una fuerte presencia de Evita en las principales categorías.

Paddington The Musical iguala un récord histórico

La nueva producción basada en el famoso oso literario se convirtió en el gran fenómeno de la ceremonia. Paddington The Musical obtuvo nueve premios, igualando el récord histórico de galardones en los WhatsOnStage Awards que hasta ahora compartían Harry Potter and the Cursed Child y Miss Saigon.

Entre los reconocimientos más importantes, el espectáculo se llevó Mejor Nuevo Musical, además de premios a dirección para Luke Sheppard, diseño escenográfico para Tom Pye, diseño de vestuario para Gabriella Slade y Tahra Zafar, diseño de sonido para Gareth Owen, y dirección musical para Matt Brind. También fue premiada la labor de casting liderada por Natalie Gallacher.

En el plano interpretativo, Timi Akinyosade fue distinguido con el premio a Mejor Debut Profesional por su trabajo en la producción.

Desde WhatsOnStage, Darius Thompson y Alex Wood celebraron el resultado señalando que el público “realmente cuidó a ese oso”, destacando el fuerte vínculo que el musical ha generado con los espectadores del West End.

Evita suma cinco premios y consagra a Rachel Zegler

Otro de los grandes triunfadores de la noche fue Evita, que obtuvo cinco premios en distintas categorías técnicas y artísticas.

La producción ganó Mejor Revival de Musical, además de reconocimientos a la coreografía de Fabian Aloise, el diseño de iluminación de Jon Clark y el diseño de video a cargo de Jamie Lloyd, Nick Ward y David Anderson.

Uno de los momentos más destacados de la ceremonia fue el premio a Mejor Intérprete en un Musical para Rachel Zegler, protagonista del espectáculo. La actriz también fue reconocida en la categoría Mejor Evento de Concierto por su presentación Rachel Zegler: Live at The London Palladium.

Otros ganadores destacados del teatro británico

En las categorías de teatro no musical, la producción de Richard II presentada en el Bridge Theatre obtuvo dos premios importantes. Jonathan Bailey fue reconocido como Mejor Intérprete en una Obra, mientras que el espectáculo ganó Mejor Revival de Obra.

El premio a Mejor Nueva Obra fue para The Comedy About Spies de Henry Lewis y Henry Shields, producción del grupo teatral Mischief Theatre.

Entre las categorías interpretativas restantes, Amber Davies fue premiada como Mejor Intérprete de Reparto en un Musical por The Great Gatsby, mientras que Stephen Fry recibió el premio a Mejor Intérprete de Reparto en una Obra por The Importance of Being Earnest. Por su parte, Emma Kingston fue distinguida con el premio a Mejor Reemplazo en un Musical por asumir el papel de Elphaba en Wicked.

Un reconocimiento especial para Les Misérables

En una edición marcada por los grandes títulos del West End, el premio a Mejor Espectáculo del West End fue para Les Misérables, que celebra su 40° aniversario como el musical de mayor permanencia en la cartelera londinense.

Otros premios incluyeron Mejor Producción Regional para 13 Going on 30 The Musical en el Opera House de Manchester, y Mejor Producción de Estudio para Young Frankenstein presentada en el Hope Mill Theatre.

La edición 2026 de los WhatsOnStage Awards volvió a demostrar el fuerte vínculo entre el público y el teatro británico, consolidando a los musicales como los grandes protagonistas de la temporada.
